Cindy Sherman
'I'm not sure what the impact of black and white pictures is but they're haunting...scary....perfect...gives the impression they're from a movie... there a few doubts about what we see... I want people to make up characters".

Mercedes Helnwein

What I find interesting when comparing the work of Mercedes Helnwein and Cindy Sherman is that the girls Mercedes draws seem to look as if they could be extras from a 1960s Nouvelle Vague film, dressed in mini-dresses with backcombed hair, which I feel resembles Sherman’s work quite strongly as presented in her work are female stereotypes: “She stopped, she has explained, when she ran out of clichés.”
