I finally got the chance to see the film Black Swan, and Natalie Portman's character, Nina, in the film, an obsessive ballerina who spirals into madness and a mental crumble, along with strange surreal fantasies and the feelings of paranoia and losing grip on reality really reminds me of the character, Carol, played by Catherine Deveuve in the film "Repulsion". The way the film creates suspense and a great feeling of claustrophobia for a young girl in a terrifying situation really made me think about my work.
There is also something about her character, and the way the whole film appears, so beautiful, however the story is horrifying and the whole issue of suicide and death contrasting with the overall perfection and prettiness, I found, made it even more eerie and disturbing.
I also found in a review, it was also compared with Polanski's "Rosemary's Baby", which I have also been drawing from for my project.
"Prior to the film's US release last month, the dance community had imagined Black Swan...As they've since discovered, the film has more in common with Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby: a terrifying portrayal of one woman's descent into madness, set in a world of claustrophobia and pain."
